Among the incentives for reenlisting during the Veteran Volunteers was a dollars “bounty” and also the arrangement the veterans could well be permitted to help keep their guns and accessories. For the reason that most of the veterans later went west, A large number of rifles saw obligation within the frontier and while in the Indian wars. Couple of of those martial guns stay in excellent problem; war Winchester ammo deals and discounts responsibility and later on assistance in the West and other don resulted in Significantly tricky use and abuse.
Ned Schwing mentioned in his reference ebook on the Model 1890 & 1906 that Winchester began proof marking them in 1908… I have no idea if that may be accurate, but will suppose that it's. The “WP” proof mark was used after the barrel and receiver were mated, assembled and concluded. This is very evident within the firearms manufactured during the late teens as a result of early 30s if the blue flaked (popped) off when the evidence was struck to the receiver frame.
